Fabian's wrath only lasted a few hours
HAMILTON, Bermuda: At 11 p.m. last night, the Bermuda Weather Service discontinued the hurricane warning for the island as Hurricane Fabian began moving away after hours of pounding the British colony with 120 mph winds; toppling trees and ripping off rooftops.
Still all citizens were being urged to exercise caution until the winds and seas subside.

Insurance business went up as Fabian bore down
HAMILTON, Bermuda: When Hurricane Fabian was off of Bermuda, homeowners flocked to local insurance companies to buy marine policies.
The Royal Gazette reported that the island's two largest insurance companies, Argus Insurance and BF&M, halted writing any new marine policies as Fabian bore down. But that did not stop telephones from ringing off the hook as customers scrambled to up their coverage or renew lapsed.
Costa Rica volcano erupts

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica: From Hurricane Fabian to The Arenal Volcano. It was indeed a day of natural disasters yesterday as Arenal, the Costa Rican volcano erupted just as Fabian was receding from Bermuda.
Arenal, according to AP, spewed lava, rocks and ash in its strongest eruption in more than two years. The lava flows were, luckily on the unpopulated north and northwest slopes of the 5,388-foot mountain. The volcano has been intermittently active since 1968.
Jamaica government increases minimum wage by 11 percent
KINGSTON, Jamaica: Jamaican workers can begin celebrating. Come November, the minimum wage in the island will be increased by 11 percent.
Labor Minister Mr. Horace Dalley, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that the increase would help offset rising costs due to the depreciation of Jamaica's currency, higher oil prices and an increase in bus fares.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad: Kidnapping continue to plague the twin-island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. The latest is the kidnapping of businessman Mr. Vernon Roopnarine, 56, who owns a business that manufactures steel gates and other items in Point Lisas, just north of Claxton Bay.
