ROAD TOWN, BVI -- The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) reportedly had a successful meeting in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, last weekend and has issued a lengthy 14-page release on matters discussed and decisions taken.

Chief Minister of Montserrat, Dr Lowell Lewis
The first was the taking over of the chairmanship by Montserrat Chief Minister, Dr Lowell Lewis from Grenada Prime Minister, Tillman Thomas.

Lewis also disclosed that his territory has received the green light from the Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the territory to maintain full membership of the OECS and to sign Declarations if possible.

The new Chairman of the sub-regional body also spoke of the importance of regional collaboration to tackle the global financial crisis and reaffirmed the commitment of Montserrat as an Overseas Dependent Territory in deepening the integration process.

The sub-regional leaders discussed the future of the financial services and decided that it was imperative to have legislation for greater transparency.

Other issues discussed included tourism, social safety, functional co-operation, economic development and the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC). BVI Premier Ralph O'Neal said that his government was pleased to accommodate the Commercial Division of the ECSC.

One of the highlights of the three-day meeting was the signing of a Declaration of Intent by Spain’s Ambassador to the Caribbean, Jesus Silva, with the OECS, which includes exchange of information and training.

The leaders of the nine member OECS States: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Grenada, Dominica, Montserrat, St Lucia, St Kitts-Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines, have endorsed a recommendation by tourism ministers for a levy to be applied to airline tickets purchased to travel within the sub-region.
