Barbados are Caribbean Under-16 Netball champions

Tuesday,  December 20, 2005

BASSETERRE, St Kitts:  Following their shock 26-24 victory over defending champions and regional giants Jamaica, Barbados captured the 2006 Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Under-16 tournament when they made light weight of Grenada in the final round of matches at the Netball City, Warner Park last Friday.

A victory over five-time champions Jamaica last Thursday night virtually assured the Bajans of the crown, but they ended with a convincing 31-9 thrashing of the Spice Girls to cop their first-ever regional Under-16 crown with a 100-percent record.

Goal-shooter Abeje Carrington, who bagged 24 from her 33 attempts, led the way for the champions and she was assisted by goal attack Shekira Boxill, who got five from seven tries.

Goal-attack Mindy Walker with six goals from 11 attempts top-scored for the fruitless Grenadians.

In other games, Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls and Trinidad and Tobago finished the tournament with victories over St Kitts and Dominica respectively.

Christina Solomon led the way for Jamaica, who secured second place with 38-17 win over the hosts. Solomon bagged 18 goals from her 21 attempts while Danielle Ellis, the winner of the team’s Most Valuable Player award got a near perfect 13 of 14.

For Trinidad, Jolisa Cooper shot 21 from 31 and K'lene Lewis eight from 16 guided the team to a 29-11 victory of Dominica.

Shanise Banfield was voted Barbados’ Most Valuable Player.
