ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada: As Grenada continues
to rebuild its tourism sector after being ravaged by two major hurricanes, GIDC/GRENCASE
in collaboration with USAID/CARANA Corporation will undertake an initiative
that will bring new dimension to the sector.
‘Buy Grenada Craft Fair’ will be the added
twist to the tourism industry here. The event will be held from November 21 –
23, 2005. The underlying long-term objective
of this event is to showcase the work of select local artisans, linking
community tourism and employment in rural areas. Greater emphasis will be
placed on the creation and development of different designs linking the crafts
sector with diversified tourism segments of garden, culture and heritage
tourism.
It is hoped initiatives such as this, will
serve to encourage mass-production of high quality crafts and transform
Grenada’s cottage craft industry into one of vibrant entrepreneurship, able to
service the local and tourist market as well as participate in niche export
markets.
Day One, Buyers’ Day, will be open to the
general public, retail outlets and craft vendors to peruse items available for
bulk purchase or to place orders. Craft producers will be present to answer
questions and participate in assessment surveys on the products, encouraged by
buyer feedback.
Days Two and Three will be open to the
general public and also to the anticipated eight thousand cruise passengers
due to visit Grenada.
