Cable & Wireless assists Antigua-Barbuda police

MARBLE HILL, Antigua: As Antigua and Barbuda marked its 24th Independence Anniversary on Tuesday, the nation's police force is faced with strong criticism and charges that they are losing the war on crime, especially in the light of last weekend's attack of the President of the Senate, in which she was allegedly raped and robbed, thus forcing a brief hospitalization. 

However, the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda is getting some much needed assistance in the strengthening of its communication capabilities in the organization's continued efforts to stamp out lawlessness in the country.

Last weekend Acting Commissioner of Police, Delano Christopher, accepted some 30 cellular phones from Cable and Wireless. 

According to a release from the government, the timely gift came about as a result of a collaborative effort between the government and Cable and Wireless. 

The release went on to state that government "will continue to enter into arrangements with members of the business community in an effort to assist the police in their crime fighting duties." 

It was also stated that work will continue on the "upgrading of all the police stations in the country by outfitting them with computers and high speed Internet service which includes networking the entire police system across the twin-island nation.

Cable and Wireless's Assistant Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Melford Nicholas in making the presentation, pointed out that his company immediately accepted the request for assistance from the government, adding that Cable and Wireless will continue to assist the lawmen in whatever way it can and added that the thirty phones is the first in a set of donations that will be made to the law enforcement body.

Meanwhile, Christopher expressed deep thanks to Cable and Wireless as she took the opportunity to called on other members of the business community to come to the aid of the police in the continued fight against crime.
