PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands: The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)
is presently providing technical assistance to the Government of Turks and
Caicos Islands to strengthen the system of national accounts.
The objective of the consultancy is to
produce revised and more reliable estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP),
that are required for effective planning, monitoring and managing economic and
social development of the country.
Mrs. Hazel Corbin, CDB National Accounts Consultant, arrived on Monday 10th October, 2005 and will be working with the staff of the statistical office until 20th October in revising and updating the TCI GDP estimates. Mrs. Corbin is an expert in the field of national accounts statistics and has over 20 years experience in compiling national accounts statistics for the member countries of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.
Mr. Delton Jones, Head of the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics, welcomed Mrs. Corbin and expressed the need to update and revise the TCI national accounts statistics and provide training on national accounts compilation to officers in the Statistical Office of TCI. The Head of Department also thanked the CDB for funding the consultancy as a part of their demonstrated commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the Statistical Unit.
In order to revise the national accounts
estimates, the Statistical Office will be conducting a Survey of Business
Establishments. National accounts estimation is dependent on a large set of
data gathered from administrative records and specially designed surveys and
censuses, all of which involve the participation of a myriad of persons and
institutions.
