ROSEAU, Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt
Skerrit, the Cabinet and an honour guard welcomed home Dame Eugenia Charles'
body on Friday in a simple ceremony at the Canefield Airport in Dominica, just
outside the capital, Roseau. About 1:00 pm
eastern Caribbean time, the body of the country's former leader arrived at the
airport where it was met by government officials and about fifty visibly moved
supporters. Dame Eugenia died in Martinique
on Tuesday following a hip replacement operation. She was flown there one week
earlier after she fell in her city residence on August 27.
Following the ceremony at the airport, Dame Eugenia's body was transported to
a funeral home about a mile away. According to spokesman for the family, Dr
Bernard Yankey, it will remain there until Wednesday for the private funeral
service that she requested before her death.
Dame Eugenia's caretaker and long-time friend, Mona Piper, said her passing
came as no surprise because the former Prime Minister was "ready for death".
