GEORGETOWN, Guyana: An agreement has
finally been reached between the Guyana Government and the country’s flag
carrier, Universal Airlines, that will aid scores of passengers left stranded
for more than a week. Officials said after
fruitful discussions with parties involved it was agreed that BWIA would
accommodate passengers in ‘block seats’ beginning early this week.
Government had given the airline up to Saturday to bring an end to the
situation, hinting that it will utilise $17 million in an escrow account to
assist passengers. Up to late Saturday evening the airline was still without
an aircraft and its Georgetown offices remained closed throughout the day.
Universal Airlines has not flown since
August 28. El Salvador-based, TACA Airlines, which was the airline’s main
leasing company, pulled out because of operational issues, leaving the local
carrier in limbo. Government officials are
still investigating this latest situation.
