GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Good news for
scores of Universal Airline passengers left stranded after the airline’s only
aircraft was pulled more than a week ago. The Guyana Government is considering
utilising funds from a $17 million escrow account, deposited by the airline in
the initial stages of its operations, to bring relief to stranded passengers.
Irate passengers in Canada, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and New York who are
unable to return to their homes and lives, were demanding some form of
government intervention.
Government is conducting an assessment into
the operations of the carrier that will conclude Friday.
Government hinted a possible intervention in
the event of non-resolution of the airlines’ problem at the completion of its
assessment.
Officials said Wednesday that the escrow
account is similar to a mandatory arrangement that is made with chartered air
services. Although Universal Airlines is not a chartered service, the
Government in its wisdom insisted that the airline make this deposit,
officials said.
Government officials said that from all
indications, Universal Airlines has been operating within the confines of
rules and regulations, which governs the industry, and as such, Government’s
intervention regarding its future operations would not necessarily be
appropriate. The airline commenced operations
several years ago following the closure of Guyana Airways 2000 (GA 2000).
