Dominican college records highest freshmen intake

ROSEAU, Dominica: As the Dominica State College (DSC) on Monday welcomed a record number of freshmen, the island’s highest home-grown tertiary institution said it made improvements in its 2005 GCE A Level examinations’ results.

The DSC said on Monday that 600 students will be enrolled this week, taking the institution’s population past the 1,000 mark for the first time since its inception in 2002. 

According to DSC officials, the college, which offers mainly Associate Degrees, will now have 1,400 students. The sharp increase in enrolment has been attributed to additional government study grants and rapidly increasing numbers in nursing school. 

Meanwhile, the college said it recorded a 65% pass rate in the London administered examinations, giving it a better showing this year compared to last years. 

The top students, according to the DSC, were Areola Banns with four as and a B, Koura Alfred one a and two Cs and Kenobi Carter one a and one B. 

The college maintained 100% passes in Literature and noticeable increases in passes in Chemistry, Economics, French, Geography and Mathematics. 

After its orientation week, which began on Monday, the college will begin its 2005-6 academic year on September 12.
