Former Dominica PM hospitalised

Friday, September 2, 2005

ROSEAU, Dominica: Former Prime Minister of Dominica, Dame Eugenia Charles, was on Tuesday rushed by air ambulance to a Martinique hospital for emergency surgery after she broke a hip.

Sources close to the former leader said she collapsed in her city residence last Saturday and was taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital. According to news reports, the doctors at the island's main hospital recommended advanced overseas treatment to correct the injury in the neighbouring French island.

Dame Eugenia was transported to the La Maynarde Hospital where she was expected to undergo a hip replacement surgery. A close friend said that she complained of severe pain on the weekend following the accident. A local insurance company facilitated her travel arrangements.

The medical team awaiting her at the Canefield Airport, three miles north of the capital, said she was in a stable condition, although she appeared to be in pain.

At 11:30 am, Dame Eugenia was flown out of the island she ruled for 15 years as some of her loyal supporters waved good bye. The Dame was Prime Minister from 1980 to 1995 and headed the Dominica Freedom Party for 25 years.

She bowed out of active politics ten years ago and lived a quiet life away from the media spotlight in Roseau Central, the constituency she represented for 25 years.
