Haynes calls on WIPA president to step aside

Tuesday, August 9, 2005

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: As the conflict over the contract row between the WICB and the WIPA continues, former West Indies opener Desmond Haynes is calling on WIPA president to step aside from direct involvement in the negotiations.

Speaking to the media at the Sherbourne Conference Centre in Barbados last Thursday shortly after being elected as first vice president of the Barbados Cricket Association, Haynes, who took up the position as Secretary of WIPA a few months ago, indicated he had made recommendations to the organisation.

“Judging from the meetings I have had with WIPA and the WICB, there is need for a lot of healing,” Haynes said.

“I have made some suggestions to WIPA that I feel we should start changing the personnel who will be negotiating. I don’t think the president of WIPA should be doing any sort of negotiating at the time…just because of the impasse and the feelings between the parties,” Haynes told the media according to a report in the Saturday Sun in Barbados.

Haynes also revealed that with his new responsibilities as a member of the BCA management team he would be giving up his position as WIPA secretary. This became even more necessary when Haynes was later elected at the same meeting to be a director on the WICB.

Retired banker Tony Marshall whose name had come up as a possible candidate for the presidency of the WICB some weeks ago, will be the other WICB director from Barbados. Marshall won a close battle over Stephen Alleyne for the position of president of the BCA. Marshall too was elected to serve as a director alongside Haynes.

It will be Marshall’s second stint as BCA President having served between 1996 and 1999.
