ANGERS, France: Martinique-born French
sprinter Ronald Pognon showed his 200-metres abilities with three impressive
performances at the 2005 French Championships on the weekend. The
former junior and youth star broke registered time faster than his previous
personal best, all were legal performances. Pognon blazed 20.38 seconds in the
heat, 20.40 in the semi-finals, before taking the finals with a 20.34
clocking. After the race Pognon said his goal
was to run fast at a relaxing speed and despite not breaking the French
national record of 20.16, he accomplished his goal of making the qualification
mark for Helsinki. In quest to win gold at
the World Championships in August, Pognon said he must put himself up against
American sprinters as much as possible to ensure he is in contention for glory
this summer. Earlier this year in Lausanne,
the 22-year-old clocked a sensational 9.99 seconds in the 100m on his way to
defeating American Olympic champion Justin Gatlin and becoming the fastest
Frenchman ever over the distance. His time placed him at joint seventh in the
world on the IAAF top list which is currently being led by Asafa Powell with a
world record time of 9.77. Pognon plans to
contest both the 100m and 200m in Helsinki and he believes he will be ready
for the challenge.
