COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: The West Indies A and their Sri Lankan counterparts played to an exciting tie in the opening match of their five one-day series at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo on Wednesday.
Set a revised target of 201, from 41 overs, the West Indies A reached 200 for six thanks an aggressive half-century from wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh. Baugh hit 65 not out from only 67 deliveries to help the Caribbean team recover from a struggling position of 99 for six.
Two solid partnerships
The visitors got off to a poor start, losing Lendl Simmons (6), Sewnarine Chattergoon (12) and skipper Darren Ganga (2) when the score was on 21 for three. However, vice-captain Marlon Samuels and David Bernard Jr. put on a 63-run partnership for the fourth wicket before losing their wickets in quick succession.
Samuels was the first to go for 34 when he was caught by behind by Prasanna Jayawardene off Dilhara Fernando's bowling. His knock included four boundaries and a six off 42 deliveries. Fifteen runs later the West Indies A lost the wickets of Bernard for 29 and Darren Sammy for two.
Just when the Sri Lankans thought they had the game in the bag Baugh and Dave Mohammed came together to share a seventh wicket stand of 101. Baugh's unbeaten 65 included two boundaries and three sixes, while Mohammed cracked an undefeated 33 of 37 deliveries to save the visitors from defeat.
Right-arm fast-medium bowler Loku Dilhara took most wickets for the hosts with three for 21.

Mohammed completed a fine all-rounder's performance by taking 4 wickets for 44 with his left-arm chinaman.
