Ronaldo, Zidane give 120,000 dollars to Haiti

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AFP): International football stars Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane on Tuesday made a 120,000-dollar donation to humanitarian projects in Haiti, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) announced.

The money will be spent in Cite Soleil, a shantytown of about 300,000 people in Port-au-Prince, said the UNDP. It will go toward sewerage projects and improving health and education.

"I was particularly struck by the dignity of the Haitians and their clear desire to live in decent conditions, despite the difficulties they face," Brazilian striker Ronaldo was quoted as saying in a UNDP statement.

Ronaldo took part in a friendly soccer international between Haiti and Brazil in Port-au-Prince in August 2004.
