LONDON, England: The world’s fastest
man, Asafa Powell of Jamaica, has been confirmed for next month’s Norwich
Union London Grand Prix. Hours after Powell
broke Tim Montgomery’s 100-metre world-record in Athens, Greece, Caribbean
Net News received word from a close source that Powell was being sought
for the London meet, but the organizers were not sure of his showing.
But after Powell’s confirmation on last Wednesday, race director Ian Stewart
said this is a 'must-see' race, one in which he believes will be one of the
best for the year as they try to persuade Olympic 100m champion Justin Gatlin
to come. "The Norwich Union London Grand Prix
has a reputation of delivering 'must-see' races…It will be the best sprint
race in the world so far this year."
Powell will line up against American veteran
and former world record-holder Maurice Greene and reigning World champion Kim
Collins of St Kitts & Nevis in the men’s 100m.
"I know I have the ability to lower the 100 metres world record even further,
Powell said. "Last year at the Norwich Union London Grand Prix I ran
9.91 seconds and if the conditions are right, I can clearly go faster."
The Jamaican lowered Montgomery’s three-year-old world record from 9.78 to
9.77 in Athens on June 14 after running a wind-aided 9.85 in Ostrava to finish
second to Gatlin, who clocked the same time.
