KINGSTOWN, St Vincent: The countdown is on for Vincy Mas 2005 and a cadre of activities
is being staged in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Since the spectacular launch of Vincy Mas on May 7, there is no doubt that the festivity will be filled with a
kaleidoscope of mas, loads of action, energetic thrills and good vibes.
From the economic side, Vincy Mas is considered to be one of the many boosters for the
country's economy. The event attracts tourists from all over the world and, in speaking to a number of travel agencies, flights are already booked for the season.
The costumes are colorful, the artistes are magnificent, the
steel pan music is certainly irresistible and the organizers as they work
together are well organized.
Reports indicates that Mas for this year’s festivity is promising to be even more competitive with a number of bands vying for the top
honours.
Caribbean Net News spoke with President of the Mas Bands Association, Hugh Ragguette, who said twelve bands will be competing in the competition this year. And due to late registration some had to be omitted. “ But better luck next time,” he said.
The bands competing include defending champions Heineken Hitz FM Dragons Cultural Organization with their presentation “Come celebrate with we”; Beautex International “Out of Africa; SVGTV Guinness Blondie Bird & Friends “Ring games”; High Voltage Mas Productions “For the love of..”; Singer Lynx Organization “Books we love”.
Other competing bands are Melbourne Artisans “The golden age of Carnival”; Deuce Morning Radio Mirage Productions “Midnight Sun”; My Imagination “Pirates of the Caribbean; Hitz FM Digicel Nelson Bloc “You asked for it”; Owen Ralph & the Professionals “The way we live”; SVG Players International “Somewhere in Taiwan”; Sting Wizards Mas Camp “Wishes”.
The real action will commence as of Tuesday June 28, with the preliminary round of the King and Queen of the Band and the Junior Calypso/Soca Monarch competition.
The actions and thrills will then sizzle on Wednesday June 29 with the “GLOW” fete. On Thursday the aspiring young panists will showcase their pan playing skills and talent at the Junior Panorama encounter. Some of the Caribbean’s beautiful young women will
vie for the title of Ms. Carival 2005 on Friday July 1 adding little touch of royalty and elegancy to Vincy Mas 2005. The delegates include Denia Nixon - Bahamas, Sharlene Richards - Dominica, Nicole Seales - Grenada, Sharlita Millington - British Virgin Island (BVI) and Dacia Blackmoore - Guyana.
On Saturday July 2, the action will get more intense and Victoria Park will come alive with blazing soca music at the Soca Monarch competition one of the hottest competitions in any Carnival event.
Dimanche Gras will kick off on Sunday July 3 with loads of sweet calypso which will entail political and social commentary among others. Jouvert/Street Party will commence on Monday July 4,
and in this event Vincentians and visitors will get themselves dirty with body paint of all colors. The moment that no one likes is the end of Carnival and as the ole saying goes “Good things never last forever”. The curtains will come
down on Vincy Mas on Tuesday July 6 with Mardi Gras.
“Enjoy the Carnival, and remember they can’t stop the
Bacchanal”. The Carnival Development Corporation says for this festivity they are encouraging carnival lovers to say no
to violence and keep Vincy Mas alive.
