COMTek to expand USVI broadband services to St Croix

Wednesday, June 1, 2005

ST THOMAS, USVI: Communications Technology, Inc. (COMTek), a high-speed broadband service provider in the US Virgin Islands, on Tuesday announced plans to expand broadband services to St Croix by the end of July 2005.

As its first foray into St Croix, COMTek acted as the official broadband provider to the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police (ACCP) Annual Conference, which was held in St. Croix from May 18-24, 2005.

COMTek first will establish connectivity in Christianisted and then roll out its broadband services in phases to the rest of the island.

At the ACCP meeting, COMTek successfully demonstrated its broadband Internet access for such applications as wireless point-to-point transmission, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and remote wireless video surveillance throughout St. Croix’s Carambola Beach Resort, the site of the event.

In addition to the services COMTek provided for the conference, other business partners also included: IBM, which provided 12 laptop computers for the COMTek Cyber Café, and BrightStar, which provided networking products.

“The launch of our broadband services in St. Croix is part of COMTek’s overall strategy to create a cost-effective, reliable and high-speed communication network to facilitate business growth and personal prosperity for all Virgin Islanders,” said COMTek President and CEO Joseph E. Fergus, who was raised in St. Croix. “There is simply no excuse for offering subpar broadband in this day and age. The people of the U.S. Virgin Islands deserve the best available technology and we are on a mission to make sure that they get it at an affordable price.”

COMTek officials said that the superior quality of the firm’s broadband services means that its clients will be able to use it for such cutting-edge applications as VoIP phone service, wireless remote video surveillance, telemedicine and video conferencing. Such applications cannot be conducted currently in the U.S. Virgin Islands in any kind of consistent or otherwise satisfactory fashion.

“The quality of COMTek’s advanced tele-communication and broadband services has proven reliable, far exceeding all of our expectations during the recent Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police 20th Annual General Meeting and Conference,” said USVI Police Commissioner Elton Lewis. “I am extremely proud that Mr. Joseph Fergus, a Virgin Islands native and a major contributor towards the success of the conference, has elected to bring COMTek’s communication services to the Virgin Islands. As a young black nationally recognized and successful entrepreneur, Mr. Fergus is a positive role model and a beacon for young Virgin Islanders.”
