BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Prominent nun,
Patricia Ann Douglas – sister of Dominica’s former Prime Minister, the late
Rosie Douglas and former Opposition Leader Michael Douglas – has lost her life
in a road accident in Barbados. She died
after being involved in a four-vehicle crash near the Boarded Hall-Carmichael
junction in St. George. According to police
reports, Douglas was in the car driven by Sister Joyce Dear, who suffered a
fractured left rib and multiple lacerations. Another sister, Joycelyn Douglas
was also travelling in the vehicle when the fatal accident occurred and her
left shoulder was fractured. Douglas was
principal at St. Joseph's Convent Marriaqua in St. Vincent for over 30 years
and was renowned for working to advance the state of the children in that
country. Sister Pat, as she was
affectionately known, was a member of the Order of St. Joseph of Cluny, and
was described as a principled, strong-willed advocate for the rights of women
and girls. She was also said to be the only Vincentian school principal to
admit or re-admit teenaged mothers.
Sister Pat led scores of parents, teachers
and students of the three Catholic-run secondary schools in St Vincent in a
silent protest march in Kingstown on November 17, 1999 to protest being
treated by the government "like second class citizens".
