Trinidad and Tobago’s Hislop released by Portsmouth

Friday, May 20, 2005

LONDON, England:  Trinidad and Tobago's goalkeeper Shaka Hislop is now looking for a new club after he was told his services were no longer needed at his English Premier League club Portsmouth last Friday.

Hislop and striker Steve Stone are senior players whose contracts expire this summer and were not in the plans of new manager Alain Perrin.

"I'm disappointed and I don't know where I'm going to go from here," Hislop said. "Things turned around under new manager Alain Perrin and I was hoping I would be offered something.

"The manager said he wanted three senior keepers next season and I would not be one of them," Hislop said.

"Now I find myself in a bit of a quandary, which is partly my own fault, because I have nothing else lined up."

A disappointed Hislop said things were happening for him when Harry (Redknapp) was boss but on his departure everything changed.

“I was first-choice keeper under Harry Redknapp but when Velimir Zajec came in, it became apparent I was going nowhere.

The 36-year-old has played in 17 matches this season and has not featured in the line up since since the home defeat by Blackburn back in January.

According to a close source of our website, Hislop is expected to join Southampton if the Saints sell Anti Niemi, although no final decision has been made.

The Trinidadian international has asked not to be considered for national duties until he can take care of his professional career, so his "wife and four kids will know where the future lies"

On Tuesday the club also announced that veteran mid-fielder Patrik Berger and wing back Hayden Foxe will not be offered new contracts this summer.
