Haitians protest for Aristide return
Friday, May 20, 2005
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (UPI): An estimated 5,000 Haitians marched on the capital calling for the return of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. UN peacekeepers kept a close eye on the procession as it made its way through Port-au-Prince.
There were few reports of violence, Haitian radio reported Thursday. Protesters Wednesday were calling for the return of Aristide from his asylum in South Africa.
The former Haitian leader left the country in February 2004 amid pressure from armed rebel groups taking over the country. UN peacekeepers began arriving a few months later to assume security efforts led by the US. Marines.
Aristide was ousted in the early 1990s only to be returned to power with the help of U.S. troops in 1994.
