PARAMARIBO, Suriname: Attorney general, Subhas Punwasi, was sworn-in on Tuesday by Suriname’s president, Ronald Venetiaan. Two new judges were also appointed.
At the ceremony at the presidential office, the head of state mentioned that his administration will continue to improve the working conditions at the Court of Justice and the office of the prosecutor.
For years Suriname has had to cope with a serious shortage of judges, resulting in a clogged judicial system. The president expressed hopes that with the two extra judges the judicial process in Suriname will speed up.
According to experts the country needs at least 30 to 50 judges and a complete overhaul of the system. Because of low salaries and other problems in the judicial system, not many jurists are willing to become a judge.
