Redevelopment of Warner Park is key to propelling St Kitts Nevis into international sports, says PM

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS: The support of Taiwan towards the redevelopment of Warner Park -- the venue for Cricket World Cup 2007 in St. Kitts and Nevis -- is key to the vision and objectives of Government in propelling the nation into hosting more international sports.

St Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and Minister of Sports, Dr Denzil Douglas in accepting the third installment of US$1.5 million for the construction of the cricket facility from the Foreign Minister of Taiwan, Dr Sun Tan Chen, said it will be more than just for casual entertainment.

“There is substantial economic value to be obtained if the programme is developed strategically and implemented with excellence as we are seeking to do here as partners in the pursuance of this particular project,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who added that the redevelopment of Warner Park is about sustaining development by providing additional economic options to pursue.

“I am exceptionally pleased, therefore, that the Government and People of the Republic of China on Taiwan are providing such critical support in this venture,” said Dr. Douglas, who thanked the Asian nation for its continued demonstration of its interest in the development of Sports and in the development of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“This cheque in the value of US$1.5 million dollars, specifically earmarked for the development project that is taking place here at Warner Park that would enable the Federation to make good on our commitment for the hosting of matches of the ICC World Cup Cricket in 2007,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

In brier remarks, Foreign Minister Chen congratulated Prime Minister Douglas for winning the bid to host Cricket World Cup matches.

“Both St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China on Taiwan see the promotion of sports as an avenue for the development of our people and supporting various sports such as cricket, football, volleyball, baseball, basketball and track and field, strengthen the relations between our two countries,” said Dr. Chen.
