Martinique-born Pognon challenges Americans

Monday, May 9, 2005

FORT DE FRANCE, Martinique:  Martinique-born European indoor 60 metres record holder Ronald Pognon, who now competes for France, is preparing to battle with American sprinters in order to gain full confidence ahead of this summer's World Championships in Helsinki.

The 22-year-old Pognon finished the indoor season with the fastest time in 60m at 6.45sec and dipped under 6.60sec ten times this season - showing his consistency over the event.

"I think I need to confront the American sprinters as much as I can if I want to improve my times," said Pognon.

The French star has the second fastest time in the world this year at 10.09. He achieved this time finishing second to Maurice Greene at the IAAF Grand Prix II meeting in Martinique last weekend.

Pognon has personal best of 10.09 and 20.49 in the 100m and 200m and he wants to challenge in both events in Helsinki.

"I will try to run on both the 100m and 200m and reach the finals of both events," Pognon said.

He is ranked at number ten in the latest IAAF 100m rankings with 1242-points behind Jamaica's Asafa Powell and 18th in the 200m which is being lead by American Shawn Crawford.
