Public awareness campaign launched in St Kitts for the transition out of sugar production

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts: A public awareness campaign on the transition from sugar production will provide the public with reliable information, says Minister of Agriculture Cedric Liburd, when he officially launched the campaign.

Addressing the nation on ZIZ Radio and Television, the Minister said that a series of programmes are planned that would address pertinent information on issues such as land use and management, severance payments, re-training of employees of the St. Kitts Sugar Manufacturing Corporation (SSMC), the settlement of SSMC debt, the protection of SSMC assets, and the implementation of soil conservation and environmental protection programmes. Minister Liburd indicated that the public awareness programme would utilize various mass media, including radio, television, newspapers town hall meetings and press conferences.

An Interim Sugar Transition Management Team has been established comprising Dr. Keith Archibald, Mr. Keith Phillip and Mr. Conrad Kelly. They would be joined by team leader Mr Gordon Alert, courtesy of funding support from the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). Together, they are responsible for implementing the transition plan.

The Minister also pointed in his April 26 address that much support is being received for the transition plan from various regional and international institutions, agencies and countries, including CDB, FAO, CARDI, IICA, Cuba, the Republic of China, and the European Union.
