Trinidad & Tobago to host major VOIP conference next month

Wednesday, April 27, 2005

GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman: Trinidad and Tobago will host a major conference on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), the low-cost but controversial voice transmission system already used by thousands in the region to make cheap phone calls.

The two-day event which takes place on May 19th and 20th, this year the is being organized by the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO), with the support of several partners, including the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) as well as the Caribbean Association of Telecom Operators (CANTO) and Caribbean Net News.

"We must constantly look for technologies and models which allow information and communication technologies (ICT) to be accessible to greater numbers of people and communities", said Bernadette Lewis, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union, who added that, "VoIP, like other technological advances, has the potential to extend affordable access and use of telecommunications services to many. This conference will help to shed light on the opportunities presented by VoIP for the region," she said.

Organizers told Caribbean Net News that the conference is designed to attract governments, regulators, operators and other interested parties of the Americas to review and confront ideas on how the opportunities offered by VoIP can best be seized by each island nation in the region.

The two-day meet follows sharply on the heels of the World Telecommunication Day Symposium

which also takes place in Trinidad & Tobago on 16th and 18th of May where critical telecommunications issues in the region will be discussed.
