FLORIDA, USA: Jamaican athletes Dorian
Scott and Kim Barrett continue to climb up the world list in the shot put as
they not only dominated the men's and women's events respectively but came
away record holders at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) outdoor
championships, held at Mike Long Track at the Florida State University in
Tallahassee, Florida.
Scott, representing Florida State captured
the men's shot with a fourth round throw of 19.61m to break his nation's
national record and moved up to 13th place in world behind American John
Godina whose throw is 21.06. Starting with an
impressive 18.72m throw, Scott gradually improved on every throw thereafter,
posting 18.75, 19.32, and 19.61. With victory already in the bag he then threw
19.26m in the fifth round before fouling on his last attempt.
After the event Scott, who broke Bob
Medlin's 28-year-old ACC record thanked teammate Garrett Johnson for the
inspiration.
"He's so focused," Scott said. "Last year
was unfortunate, but if you know Garrett you knew he was going to bounce back.
I wasn't expecting anything less from him."
Johnson made it a 1-2 finish for Florida
State with a throw of 19.17m. Scott also
finished fourth in the discus with his best effort being 51.91m.
Barrett a senior at the University of Miami won two events in as many days at
the championships. Barrett won the women’s shot put on Friday to add to the
hammer throw title she won the day before.
The senior recorded an ACC Outdoor Championship meet record of 17.94m to win
shot put in a dominating fashion and a 62.20m in winning the hammer.
She was made to work in the hammer but managed to come from behind to beat
Kristen Callan who showed her winning intentions from the first round. Callan
had a leading throw of 62.13m heading into the final, round but Barrett used
her technique and power to produce what was a perfect attempt. When the
officials announced the seven centimeter lead Barrett breathed a sigh of
relief.
It was back to all fun and games for Barrett
in her favorite event, the shot, erasing Nicole Sims eight year-old mark of
16m. She is the eighth best performer in the event in the world this season.
In other events Ricardo Chambers a Jamaican freshman at Florida State won the
men’s 400m to add to his indoor championship crown. Chambers’ winning time of
45.32 ties the track record, held by his current coach Ken Harnden. The
Jamaican was also a member of the winning 1,600m relay team.
Also competing at the meet were Kimberly Walker of Trinidad and Tobago, who
took bronze in the women’s 90m in 10.58.The Florida State senior also finished
fifth in the 200m in 24.20. Robert Ibeh of the Cayman Islands ran 10.85 and
