ST. JOHN’S, Antigua: The Government of
Antigua and Barbuda has taken steps to have police stations in the country
equipped with modern tools of communication utilizing information technology.
Minister responsible for Communications Dr Edmond Mansoor, recently presented
the Dockyard Police Station with a Pentium Computer System and High Speed
Internet connection. Other stations will be equipped in the coming months.
He noted that the government recognizes the need for the law enforcement
agencies to be linked which can be achieved through internet connectivity.
He also noted that in light of the
approaching Sailing Week activities, it is pertinent for the police in the
historical Nelson’s Dockyard area to have Internet access which will enable
them to communicate with individuals on land and at sea.
Sergeant Albert Wade who accepted the computer on the behalf of the Dockyard
Police Station, noted that the system and the internet connection will assist
in the filing of police record. He spoke of instances where yachtsmen may
witness crimes committed at sea but have no way of reporting such situation to
the police. The venture was made possible
through the efforts of Dr. Mansoor, Mr. Mark Punter and staff of the
Government’s IT Centre and the management of Antigua Computer Technology ACT.
