SCARBOROUGH, Tobago: Taxi drivers and
souvenir vendors in Tobago are angry with officials for not allowing a cruise
ship the 'Ocean Village' to dock at the island's port.
Port officials in Scarborough told Caribbean Net News that the cruise
ship arrived just a few minutes after seven o'clock Tuesday morning but was
denied berthing as the huge ship would have taken up most of the space for a
long period of time, making it impossible for the inter-island ferries and
other ships to use the facility, a situation that would have made life
difficult for thousands of nationals, as explained by Chief secretary Orville
London. However, the taxi drivers and vendors
do not share London's view, arguing that they were robbed of making a dollar
transporting passengers and selling their wares to the many visitors aboard
the ship. Tourism officials told Caribbean
Net News that Tobago in recent times has become a "very popular stop" for
many cruise ships, adding that the number of visitors has begun to pass the
amount of people resident on the island.
