LAVENTILLE, Trinidad: 21-year-old Olympic medallist George Bovell III and collegiate Candice Scott captured Trinidad and Tobago's 2004 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Award Monday night at Queen's Hall, St Ann's in Trinidad.
Bovell, a bronze medallist in the Men's 200m Individual Medley Final, defeated West Indies star batsman five-time award winner Brian Lara by two votes. Lara a firm favourite stood in silence as Bovell's name was announced.
"I respect Lara's record, but, man, Bovell was on the podium at the Olympics and he gets my nod," Hasely Crawford said.
As predicted hammer-thrower Candice Scott who recently became the first athlete to win three NCAA titles in the weight throw event, won the women's award which was presented by the President's wife, Dr Jean Ramjohn-Richards. Scott was also a ninth place finisher in the hammer-throw at last year's summer Olympic Games in Athens Greece.
