Secretary General of La Francophonie to visit Dominica

ROSEAU, Dominica: Secretary General of the International Organization for La Francophonie, Abou Diouf will pay an official visit to Dominica on Friday March 18, 2005.

This visit will be the highlight of Dominica’s celebration of “Semaine de la Francophonie” (Francophonie Week) which runs officially from March 14-20, 2005. 

This year a number of activities have been planned to celebrate “Semaine de la Francophonie”. These include: French Days for Primary and Secondary Schools on March 17th and 18th respectively, an exhibition at Alliance Francaise, a film festival, a waiter’s race and a Soiree Francophone.

This week’s activities are being organized by the Francophonie partners in Dominica, the National Commission for la Francophonie, the Alliance Francaise and the Dominica Association of Foreign Language Teachers. 

The International Organization for La Francophonie (OIF) currently comprises fifty-three (53) member States and Governments and ten (10) Observers in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and the Caribbean.

The organization is referred to as the one that links countries with a common language-French- which is used in varying degrees in OIF members states. It also serves to link French Creole independent countries. 

The OIF offers technical and financial assistance to member states in several areas including the following: Education and training; higher learning and research; Peace, democracy and human rights; Promotion of the French language, cultural and linguistic diversity; Sustainable Development and Capacity Building of developing member states for negotiations in international fora.

Dominica’s membership of the OIF allows for closer relations with developed and developing member states in the five continents. It has served to enhance relations particularly with France and Canada.

The Secretary General of the OIF will be accompanied by seven officials and while in Dominica will meet the President of Dominica, the Prime Minister and the members of the National Commission for La Francophonie.
