Aristide vows to return to Haiti
Friday, March 11, 2005
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (UPI): Ex-Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide is vowing to return to the Caribbean nation as its leader, The Star newspaper in South Africa reported Thursday. Aristide, who is living in exile in South Africa, did not say when he planned to return, however. Elections are scheduled in Haiti for October and November. The former leader left Haiti on February 29, 2004, amid increasing pressure from armed rebel groups calling for his resignation. Aristide has maintained he has not provoked the protests calling for his return, which at times have turned violent, leaving some 300 people dead since September.
