ST. JOHN'S, Antigua: Law enforcement
officials in Antigua are carrying out investigations into the circumstances
surrounding the death of a woman whose body was discovered in the ladies room
of the arrival lounge at the Vere Cornwall Bird International Airport
Wednesday night. Speaking via the telephone,
police in St. John's told Caribbean Net News that the body of a
23-year-old Jamaican female was found hanging by the strap of her handbag from
the door in the ladies room a few minutes after 11:00 p.m. Police said the
woman arrived in the country aboard Leeward Islands Air Transport (LIAT)
flight 509 from the British Virgin Islands (BVI) earlier and was due to board
another flight on Thursday for Jamaica. When
contacted, officials at LIAT told Caribbean Net News that the airline's
schedule shows that flight 509 would have left the island of Tortola in the
BVI at 6:15 p.m and arrived in Antigua around at 8:45 p.m.
Police say they are not ruling out suicide
as investigations continue. The discovery of
the woman's body come as the country is seeking to bring closure to three
mysterious murders involving women last year which sent a high level of fear
throughout the country's female community, causing many to arm themselves with
various weapons, the most prominent being machetes.
One St. John's business is reported to have sold over 1,000 cutlasses in one
day.
