FLORIDA, USA: Martinique-born sprinter
Ronald Pognon will be in the spotlight in the men's 60-metres dash at this
weekend's European Indoor Championships in Madrid, Spain. The championship
will take place in the newly rebuilt Palacio de Deportes stadium from 4 to 6
March 2005.
The 22-year-old sprinter now competes for
France and is the favourite to take the gold medal in the men's 60-metres.
Started out as a football player, Pognon found his love for track and field
after watching Donovan Bailey breaking the men's 100m world record in the
Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
Five years later in 2001, Pognon crowed
himself European Junior 200m champion (20.80), in 2003 he returned to snatch
the 100m under 23 title in 10.13. Now in 2005 he his the world leading and the
European indoor record holder over 60-metres with a time of 6.45.
Looking at Pognon's performance this season, his projected time for the 6.45
to 100-metres should be 9.92. Statistic have shown that all the men who have
run under 6.46 indoors, have gone sub-10 seconds during their careers. Pognon
will clash with defending champion Jason Gardener of Great Britain and
compatriot Mark Lewis-Francis.
