Jamaica's Davian Clarke takes men's 400m in Madrid

MADRID, Spain: Jamaica’s Davian Clarke produced yet another remarkable run to hold off Carlos Santa from the Dominica Republic to win the men's 400-metres in the at the 18th Jose M Cagigal Memorial Athletic meeting in Madrid on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Clarke, followed up on his 46.34 season opener in Stockholm and 45.90 in Birmingham with a 45.94 win in Madrid. Running out of lane six, the Jamaican defeated Santa (45.96) and European Outdoor silver medallist David Canal (46.49). Canal was unable to repeat last weekend's Spanish record performance of 45.93. Clarke moved up one place to number six in the latest IAAF ranking release earlier this week, while Canal is ranked in 18th place.

Former Olympic silver medallist Glory Alozie of Spain crossed the line first in the women's in the 60-metres hurdles for the second time this season. Alozie's recorded the second fastest time in the world this season of 7.92 to finish ahead of Jamaicans Michelle Freeman (7.95) and compatriot Vonette Dixon who equalled her season best time of 7.98 for third place. Anay Tejada of Cuba took fourth in 8.01.

Felipe Vivancos made it two in a row for Spain when he equal the Spanish record to win the men's race. Vivancos won in a time of 7.60 to finish in front of Sweden's Robert Kronberg and Haiti's Dudley Dorival in 7.62secs and 7.63secs respectively. 

World and Olympic long jump champion Dwight Phillips of USA upset Olympic 100-metres silver medallis Portugal’s Francis Obikwelu in the men's 60-metres final. The 27-year-old American clocked the second best 60m time in the world this season of 6.47 to finish ahead of Obikwelu who ran a person best 6.56. Uchenna Emedolu of Nigeria came third in 6.67.
