KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent  The Methodist Hall in Kingstown erupted into a chorus of murmurs as Natasha Mayers was on Saturday announced as the St Vincent & Grenadines 2004 Sports Personality of the Year.

Erstwhile expressions of pent up anticipation instantly changed to amazement after the announcement.

The reaction might not have meant that Mayers was undeserving of the award but rather that it came as a surprised. One sports journalist covering the event described the announcement as an “anticlimax”.

Mayers, of Team Athletics SVG, was the judges’ choice ahead of female cricketer, Cordell “Pat” Jack, whom one of SVG’s leading sports journalists, in one of his articles last week, suggested might have won the judges’ favour.

The announcement came as the prized jewel in the crown of Team Athletics SVG which captured several of the other top awards at the event.

Although she did not win the coveted title of Sports Personality of the Year, Jack was adjudged Senior Sportswoman of the Year, ahead of the other finalists Natasha Mayers and Alexia Glasgow of the SVG Rugby Union Football Club.

Adonson Shallow of Team Athletics SVG is the Junior Sportsman of the Year. He outshone the other finalists Seon Sween of the SVG Cricket Association and Corey Huggins of the SVG Tennis Association.

Team Athletics SVG’s representative also won the Junior Sportswoman of the Year award which went to Kineke Alexander.

Deighton Butler of the SVG Cricket Association was adjudged Senior Sportsman of the Year ahead of the other finalists Kendol Velox of the SVG Football Federation and Hollis Greene of the SVG Rugby Association.

Roxel John of the SVG Women’s Cricket Association was declared Coach of the Year ahead of Rawlson Morgan of Team Athletics SVG and James Bentick of the SVG Squash Association.

The SVG Table Tennis Association came in ahead of the SVG Football Federation and the SVG Squash Association to win the Association of the Year award.

In the media category, Rohan Thomas won the award for the Best Sports Story while Kenton Chance was adjudged to have taken the Best Sport Photograph. The title of Sports Journalist of the Year went to E. Glenford Prescott.

Patrick John won the award for Groundsman of the Year.

Although Pamenos Ballantyne was declared the OECS Sport Personality of the Year 2004, his local association, Team Athletics SVG did not nominate him for any of Saturday’s awards. At least one speaker during Saturday’s event voiced his displeasure with the situation and called on Ballantyne and his association to rectify what ever differences they might have.
