GEORGETOWN, Guyana: The private sector, in flood-stricken Guyana, has joined forces with the government to lend a strong arm of assistance in the national relief effort, following the massive flooding which forced the closure of the city and several of its surrounding areas following persistent showers.
A tired President Bharrat Jagdeo told Caribbean Net News via a brief telephone conversation that he had discussions with members of the sector who gave him their word that they would assist in what ever way they could.
The President expressed delight that the "private sector is on board".
"I indicated to them where we have gaps and they will be working towards preparing some hot meals too and trying to get these out to people, among other things,"
he said.
President Jagdeo also voiced satisfaction at the support given by the country's main Opposition People's National Congress Reform (PNC/R).
"The opposition has been very supportive," he said, noting that he had, earlier yesterday, briefed Opposition Leader, Mr. Robert Corbin, on the status of what is now a massive national relief effort.
"I know that people are worried but I want them to know that with the limited capacity that we have, we are trying our best to get help to everyone in an equitable fashion," said
Jagdeo.
Meanwhile, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) announced that a flood relief committee has been organised by the PSC and is being headed by Mr. Yesu Persaud, the organization's President.
According to a press statement from the group, members of the committee are Persaud; Mr. Eddie Boyer, President - Georgetown Chamber of Commerce; Ms. Doreen de Caires, President -Guyana Manufacturers Association; Mr. Christopher Ram; Mr. Chris Fernandes and Mr. Kit
Nascimento.
The statement went on to add that the committee is seeking to mobilize and coordinate support from the private sector to supply prepared meals, dry food, bedding and blankets and transportation for distribution through the government agencies coordinating the flood relief, adding that, due to the widespread and immediate need for flood relief, the Chamber of Commerce in Georgetown has decided to utilize the funds donated by Guyanese for the Grenada and Asian Tsunami relief in support of the local flood relief effort.
