BROOKLYN, USA: Sylvia Hinds-Radix has become the first national from the Caribbean island of Barbados to be elected to the Supreme Court of the State of New York.
Justice Hinds-Radix served previously as judge of the Civil Court in Brooklyn, New York where she had a laudable tenure. At an impressive induction ceremony held in Brooklyn, New York at First Baptist Church of Crown Heights on Sunday, December 19, 2004, New York State Supreme Court Justice Diana A. Johnson administered the oath to her.
The ceremony was witnessed before a capacity audience, including elected officials, many members of the judiciary, her large family and numerous friends. Her elderly mother, Mrs. Germay Hinds held the family bible for the induction ceremony. In her remarks Justice Hinds-Radix was expansive in expressing appreciation and gratitude, especially to the people of Brooklyn, who voted for her to become the newest member of New York State highest court. She gave thanks to her family who she said were the backbone of her campaign, and to her husband Joseph, a Brooklyn dentist, whom she labeled… “The wind beneath my wings” Justice Hinds-Radix pledged that during her tenure as judge of the Supreme Court she will conscientiously and fairly administers the law of the State without fear or favor. A warm, gracious and unassuming lady, Justice Hinds-Radix has been a resident of Brooklyn for more than thirty years, living with her husband, a renowned dentist, and their three daughters. Before being elected to the bench, she had a successful law practice and served as legal advisor to District Council 37, the largest New York State municipal labor union. Dr. Joseph Radix, her husband, when asked by this reporter for his feelings about his wife’s latest accomplishment of becoming Justice of the Supreme Court, he said with obvious pride and glee. “I am extremely proud of the wonderful achievements my wife and the mother of my children. My family is most gratified to the people of Brooklyn who gave her the opportunity to serve. I know she will be an excellent and fair Judge for all the people of this great State of New York. A State that has done so much for my family.”
