BASSETERRE, St. Kitts: The plans and programmes outlined in the Speech from the Throne have
been overwhelmingly embraced and endorsed in the recent general elections, said
Governor General Sir Cuthbert Sebastian at the formal opening of the St. Kitts
and Nevis National Assembly.
Delivering the near one-hour address, the Governor General said the vision is expected to spur every Kittitian and Nevisian to build on the outstanding achievements to date and to create a new St. Kitts and Nevis in which all citizens and residents would continue to expand on the abundance of freedoms that are enjoyed.
Sir Cuthbert listed among the achievements the freedom of access to high quality education, proper health services, suitable housing accommodation and comprehensive social services as well as the freedom to work, invest and establish businesses as a means of advancing St. Kitts and Nevis and providing income commensurate with effort, resourcefulness and creativity.
He told Parliamentarians and the Nation that the freedom to peacefully pursue daily personal and business endeavours in a clean, healthy, safe and crime-free environment; freedom from the debilitating grip of poverty, deprivation, disease, discrimination and alienation of all forms and the freedom to give full expression to the various views and ideas without fear of recrimination will continue to be protected by the Denzil Douglas Labour Government which was re-elected for a third straight term in the October 25th elections.
Sir Cuthbert also said the Labour Government will continue to protect and encourage the freedom for all citizens and residents to unleash their talents and capabilities in the pursuit of happiness and the creation of a peaceful and happy society replete with opportunities for wealth-creation and personal advancement.
Before delivering the Speech from the Throne, the Governor General took the Salute and inspected a Guard of Honour drawn up by members of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Band.
