Castro's granddaughter pledges allegiance to US flag
Friday, December 17, 2004
MIAMI, Florida (AFP) - Alina Salgado, a granddaughter of Cuban President Fidel Castro, became a US citizen this week 10 years after leaving communist Cuba to reunite with her
émigré mother.
"I want to keep my life private and personal (...) I don't want my private life to come out in the newspaper," Salgado, 26, told The Miami Herald, asked about her decision.
Her mother, Alina Fernandez, had no comment.
Alina Fernandez fled Cuba in a silver-screen-worthy escapade in 1993, after the collapse of the Soviet bloc. A trim ex-model, she packed on weight, and used a wig and Spanish passport to flee to Madrid. She eventually moved to the United States, where her daughter joined her.
Fernandez is the daughter of Castro and socialite Naty Revuelta Claws, and was born in 1955.
