Grenada’s political problem keeps repeating itself

Wednesday, December 1, 2004

Dear Editor:

It seems as though Grenada political problem keeps repeating itself over and over again, with the same old political tactics coming from opposition journalists and politicians. During the Gairy regime the cry was all about police brutality. In the Bishop reign, the cry was the same thing, PRA brutality. Now we are hearing the same thing again under this present NNP regime about police brutality coming from the opposition mouth piece.

During the PRG reign lawyers who were human rights activists and anti revolution are now parliamentarians or members of some opposition forces. Some of them who were anti-Gairy became anti-revolution and now they are anti NNP. It is very confusing to see foes become friends in order to gain political power, while some of our young people are followers of the opposition forces because they are not aware of Grenada's political history and the players who are involve in the political game. Based on my experience, there are no clean hand politicians in the opposition camp. They all were players in the bloody events of the early 1980s.

Some went to jail during the revolution; others went into exile after the invasion. Now they are together trying to fool fools who don't know their history.

With the unity of the NDC/RMC, the sad events of the 1980s are not a major issue any more. Those who die or wounded during the political conflicts between left and right, town and country and between Marxists and Socialists and Capitalists, are now forgotten. But the big question is: How long will those events remain forgotten?

History has a way of repeating itself and those who are guilty of the bloody events will be punished one day. It is very sad for clean handed citizens to sit quietly and watch the same old culprits play the old dirty political games again. During my resent visit to Grenada after Ivan's disaster, I had the privilege to talk to both opposition and government supporters and it seems as though some people are not concern about the past. In addition, some people are concentrating on taking power or holding on to power.

However, I am very much disappointed with some of the old political players. I personally believe that it is unfair to play political games with people's history, for the purpose of gaining political power. My only hopes is that I believe that the blood of the innocent citizens will one day comes back and haunt the guilty ones and they will be punished severely. As I look closely, I see the blood on the left and right hands of those evil doers. The innocent dead folks spirit still roaming and watching the guilty living ones. It won't be long before judgment day.
