GEORGETOWN, Guyana: The South American
Cooperative Republic of Guyana has been selected to host the 20th Meeting of
the Heads of State and Government of the Rio Group in 2006. This decision was
made at the just-concluded 18th Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Guyana currently represents the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM)
grouping in the Rio Group. As of January
2005, Guyana will join Argentina and Brazil as a member of the Troika which is
responsible for coordinating and representing the group's interest and
activities.
In a telephone interview with Caribbean
Net News, a Guyana Foreign Affairs spokesman noted that the country's
position on the bureau will help to cement links between the English-speaking
Caribbean and Latin America.
The Rio Group's birth lies within the
Contadora Group which is made up of Colombia, Panama and Venezuela, which was
formed to pursue a peaceful solution to a number of Central American problems.
In 1985, the Latin American Support Group to
Contadora which is made up of Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay was formed.
In November, 1986 these eight countries held a meeting in Brazil and
constituted the Permanent Mechanism for Consultation and Concerted Political
Action known as the Rio Group.
The purpose of this group was to consolidate
political and economic cooperation and foster a more systematic approach to
securing solutions to the numerous problems faced by the group's members and
to fast-track the process of integration in the region.
