London flies the flag for Dominica

Tuesday, November 2, 2004

EAST HAM, England: Newham Council in London will commemorate the National day of Dominica by flying its national flag for the first time at the Town Hall in East Ham on Wednesday, November 3.

The flag will be unveiled at a ceremony taking place on the steps of the Town Hall at 11am and attended by Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, Civic Ambassador Cllr Pat Holland and Cllr Pearson Shillingford as well as representatives from Dominica.

As part of the council’s flags policy the Dominica flag has been added to the 22 flags already flown by the council and will reflect the significant Dominican community based in Newham.

Cllr Shillingford said: “As far as we are aware Newham is the only council in the UK to fly the Dominica flag and where better to celebrate diversity than in one of the most diverse places in the country.”

From Wednesday the flag will be flown on the same day every year.

Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: “National days are a wonderful way of celebrating different cultures with friends and relatives. Newham has a significant Dominican community and the decision to fly the flag of Dominica reflects this.

“We also have strong links with the country and representatives from Dominica have visited the borough on a number of occasions during the past three years. I’m delighted so many will be in attendance on Wednesday to watch the flag fly from the Town Hall.”

Refreshments, provided by members of the Dominican community, will be provided after the ceremony.
