Rift between Grenadian and Trinidad police

ST GEORGE‘S, Grenada: A rift between local
police in Grenada and those of the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago
appears to be deepening. Local police are
quite vocal about what they say is the way the Trinidadian forces in Grenada
are operating, claiming that they are a law unto themselves.
While other forces from the Regional Security Services (RSS) are under the
command of the local Commissioner of Police the lawmen in Grenada say the
Trinidadian forces respond and take orders directly from their chief who in
turn takes orders from his superior in Trinidad.
Though the police high command has not acknowledge the rift officially, many
of the policemen even those of high rank are clearly upset about situation and
are threatening to resign. If the local
police go ahead with their threat of mass resignation, law and order would be
seriously affected. The police gave details
about how a high ranking member of government was whisked out of the country
in a helicopter even without their knowledge.
Hours after, talk of people wanting to stage a coup against the government of
Dr. Keith Mitchell emanated out of Trinidad.
The opposition described the allegation as one from a dreamer since according
to them the Mitchell administration has done and is doing enough to
self-destruct. Now with discontent within the
police, this may well be another phase that could be as devastating as Ivan
the Terrible himself.
