Tuesday, September 28, 2004
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: According to the
latest release of travel data, the number of tourists visiting Trinidad &
Tobago during the period of January to May 2004, has increased by 17,139, or
10.2 percent, from the same period in 2003.
"The largest number of visitors originated
from the US," said Warren Solomon, Vice President of Tourism.
These figures are a result of the efforts of the Tourism and Industrial
Development Company of Trinidad & Tobago (TIDCO). TIDCO's goal is "to market
and promote Brand T&T."
TIDCO has been pursuing several
niche-marketing strategies to raise the international profile of the
destination, including advertising in a number of popular international
publications, participating in tourism trade shows, such as the International
Travel Bourse in Berlin (the world's largest travel fair) and the World Travel
Market (WTM) in London as well as the international promotion of Trinidad
Carnival - "The Greatest Show on Earth."
The number of visitors for the 2003 Carnival
season was one of the record highs since 1997, totaling 40, 455.
"With this encouraging trend, TIDCO is confident that projections for overall
visitor arrivals for 2004 will be exceeded," said Warren Solomon, Vice
President of Tourism. 58.2 percent of all
incoming visitors were leisure and vacation travelers and the largest market
share of visitors originated from the USA. 65,475 US residents visited
Trinidad and Tobago from January to May this year; 8,854 or 16 percent more
visitors as compared to the corresponding period last year.
Visitors from Europe increased by 6,527 or
18.5 percent, from 35,258 in 2003 to 41,785 in 2004. Tourist arrivals to
Tobago also increased significantly for the period, with 28,623 visitors
arrivals. This is an increase of 4,429 from the corresponding period last
year, or 18 percent.
