Grenada's PM rejects national unity government

ST GEORGE‘S, Grenada: The government of
Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell has rejected a proposal by the main
opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the formation of a national
unity government in light of the national crisis left by Hurricane Ivan.
The killer hurricane left just over one billion dollars in damages and claimed
some 38 lives. Leader of the NDC opposition
leader Tillman Thomas says no one political organisation in Grenada can
effectively manage its citizens out of this crisis and the collective will,
energies and talent of all Grenadians will be required.
The proposal called for the 15 elected members of parliament to form part of
the government with the opposition leader as deputy Prime Minister.
Political pundits here believe that Mitchell has thrown away a golden
opportunity to demonstrate that his party can pull the resources of everyone
to develop the country. The ruling government
has being plagued with allegations of corruption throughout its reign and the
pundits are of the view that the opposition would have provided life support
for the government, especially when it failed to protect the business places
which were robbed since there were no members of the security forces in place
when the looting began. Now the opposition
says it is putting mechanisms in place to see how it can help Grenada recover
from its present state.
