St. Kitts and Nevis largely unaffected by Hurricane Ivan

Friday, September 10, 2004

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts: Although St. Kitts and Nevis remains largely unaffected by Hurricane Ivan, which passed some 420 miles south-south-east of St. Kitts on Wednesday morning, its back winds generated 9-foot waves that pounded the island’s Caribbean coast.

The waves led to the closure of Old Road Bay, the New Town Bay and Irish Town Bay Roads as sand and other debris from the sea were deposited in areas up to 40 feet inland along the coast.

Fishermen at the Basseterre Ferry Terminal and along the bay road were forced to haul their fishing boats to safety, while residents and store owners took the necessary precaution to protect their properties.

The road was closed Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning and traffic, especially passenger buses, had to be diverted along the route.

Workers from the Public Works and Environment departments were busy Thursday morning cleaning the bay roads.

Old Road Bay, severely damaged by Hurricane Lenny, was undermined in several areas by the high seas and pounding waves.

Drivers are being urged to drive along the route with extreme caution and to keep closer to the mountain side of Old Road Bay.

It is business as usual in St. Kitts and Nevis and the twin-island Federation remains open to visitors.
