Caribbean airline on terror website

Tuesday, September 7, 2004

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: What appears to be a doctored image of one of the Caribbean’s leading airlines BWIA has been spotted on a terror website showing an exploding plane with its fuselage and wing on fire, while seemingly landing next to figures of hooded women and the landing gear of a crashed plane.

The most likely doctored image was posted on the website of the Global Islamic Media Center on August 25th. The site is noted as the mouthpiece of the Osama Bin Laden-led terrorist organization according to online terror watch groups.

Only a week before the image was posted, it was reported in the local media that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had installed a permanent base within the American Embassy in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, to assist in the search for what they deem to be one of the most wanted men in the world; an Al Qaeda terrorist suspect – Adnan El Shukri Jumah. Shukri Jumah, who is said to have spent time in the country after FBI agents began the search for him in 2003.

The global Islamic site has since been shut down, but reports have disclosed that threats have been previously posted by terror groups who want the heads of the political leaders of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Jordan and Chechnya for “the perceived links to the United States.” The Islamic Organization has posted images of hostages being be-headed. They were taken by the Iraq militants protesting the US occupation of that country.

A BWIA official said the L-1011 pictured on the website was one of four decommissioned several years ago and replaced by the Airbus A340.

The colours of the BWIA planes have since been changed and, according to the official, "This could have been a photo taken by an amateur and posted on a website dedicated to showing pictures of planes from around the world. From there, anyone could have access to it. But the question is why they chose a Bee Wee plane?"
