Guyana shooting spree
Thursday, September 2, 2004
GEORGETOWN, Guyana: According to Britain’s
Press Association, four people, including a 9-year-old girl, have been shot
and killed in armed robberies since last weekend in Guyana, sparking new fears
of a resurgence in violent crime. There have
been eight shootings since Saturday, Guyana police spokesman John Sauers said.
There were more than 162 homicides in 2002, and 210 in 2003 in the South
American country of 700,000 residents. Previously, the country averaged about
50 killings a year. Police blamed criminal gangs and escaped convicts for the
upsurge in violence, which included the targeting of police officers.
More than 100 homicides have been reported this year in the former British
colony.
