Seen as the coming man of sprinting and inflicted two successive defeats on
Olympic 100 metres champion Maurice Greene recently in Europe. To some
people's minds he would have been a genuine contender in last year's world
championships had he not been disqualified along with the histrionic Jon
Drummond in the quarter-finals. Accepted judgement in more mature manner than
Drummond but the 21-year-old knew he would have another day at a major
championships. He certainly believes that he is capable of delivering
Jamaica's first sprint title since Don Quarrie won the 200m in Montreal in
1976. "I am in world record shape and it could take that to get the gold
medal," he said. Tonique Williams-Darling

Has burst onto the 400 metres scene with a dramatic flourish this season and
has shot down last year's world champion Ana Guevara twice in the Golden
League this season. The first victory, in Rome, ended the Mexican's two-year
unbeaten streak and is on course for a share or better of the one million
dollar bonus. Has made a dramatic improvement this season at the age of 28 and
ran a national record 49.15sec in the Paris Golden League meeting even though
she was feeling unwell. A keen artist, she may well be painting a self-portrait
of herself winning Olympic gold here.
